Reading for Belonging and Knowledge

How does reading a book help me as a Diversity Equity and Inclusion consultant?

Reading while being a Latina, means that I can strengthen my empathy and learn new connections or traditions of other Latinas living in Puerto Rico or Nicaragua. Reading about people with disabilities helps me gain insight into the limitations our society puts on people with disability and I get to learn about their culture.

Reading about our American history through the eyes of immigrants or the working-class helps me understand why our two-day weekend is valuable and the phenomenal labor history in our country. Reading outside of my culture or genre or country can be a challenge but it does get easier! All of these stories are now part of a new information bank that I can draw from when interacting with people.
